It is not exactly that he lies, but Alan Greenspan certainly ranks among the most duplicitous figures to serve in modern American government. Using his exalted status as economic wizard, the Federal Reserve chairman regularly corrupts the political dialogue by sowing outrageously false impressions among gullible members of Congress and adoring financial reporters. These distortions are not harmless; they become solemn writ for lawmakers and opinionmongers. Greenspan is especially destructive when he opines on public matters outside his supposed expertise as a central banker. His thinking is still anchored by Ayn Rand's brittle social philosophy: Let the strong prevail, let the weak pay for their weakness.

What happened in Haiti was a coup d'état, and it's almost funny to hear Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and Scott McClellan call that claim "absurd" and "nonsense." The coup didn't come in one fell strike, which fact camouflaged it for a time; we're used to a coup being a coup--which means a cut or blow in French--something sudden. But the coup against Aristide, and by extension against the Haitian people, was prolonged, a chronic coup. It began when Aristide was first elected at the end of 1990 and continued right up until he was hustled aboard a plane and flown to what he was told would be a place of his choice but that turned out to be the former homeland of fabled killer and diamond collector Jean-Bédel Bokassa, a country where, according to the CIA country report available on the web, a ten-year elected civilian government was recently replaced by a military coup d'état. Sound familiar?
One thing about coups: They don't just happen. In a country like Haiti, where the military has been disbanded for nearly a decade, soldiers don't simply emerge from the underbrush; they have to be reorganized, retrained and resupplied. And of course, for something to be organized, someone has to organize it. At the end of the 1700s when heroic fighters like Henry Christophe, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Toussaint L'Ouverture joined forces to overthrow the French planters, they did it in a fashion quite similar to these latter-day brigands. Driving into one city after another with sabers drawn, burning and looting and seizing control, they took the north and then moved southward. Even then, with their scant means of communication, they planned it, they organized it. And they too had help from abroad--from the Americans, in fact.
In the current coup, there are several players. There is the disgruntled former Haitian army (an institution with a violent and unpalatable recent history), which has been wielded many times in the service of coups d'état, often subsidized by its masters, the elite of Haiti. The elite, too, had their hand in this coup--it's hard to believe in this day and age, but they must be called the entrenched class enemies of the Haitian people. There is "a growing enthusiasm among businessmen to use the rebels as a security force," said a news report from the Los Angeles Times after the remnants of the Haitian army that helped engineer the coup descended on the capital. "[The businessmen] welcomed the rebels."

CHARLOTTE--Howard Dean is awesome. But I can't see how he would add much to Kerry's chances of winning the presidency. By virtue of being the last of the so-called "top tier" candidates standing ...so far, granted... Senator John Edwards has shown that he can not only win votes on his own, he is in ascendancy. He is also handsome, a gifted speaker, a man of the people, smart, good-hearted, and Southern. General Wes Clark is also all of those things, although he didn't get as many votes as Edwards, But has the added advantage of a distinguished military career...thus adding so much gravitas to a Kerry ticket as to make Bush-Cheney seem laughable by comparison...even with their self-touted on-the-job experience, and, of course, Bush's brilliant stealth tactics while in the National Guard.
Of all the other possible candidates Mr. Meyer mentions, the only one that should even be considered is Senator Hillary Clinton. But I tend to think Edwards could achieve what she could bring, and then some. The others are simply untested, or tested and failed. Edwards and Clark have been tested and vetted...and have met with considerable approval.
Al Gore might make an interesting "wild card", as would someone outside the usual suspects, like a Robert Redford or an Oprah Winfrey.
But of the usual suspects...don't stray too far from Edwards or Clark. If you do, you lose...or make it much harder on Kerry.
Think synergy! All democratic forces should converge to send Bush packing.
The fate of the world is at stake.

But now we find out that January the 13th was also almost the day the world ended. Or at least got a good whacking.
Should we let this taint our day? I say no...since, alas, it missed us.

Bush says YES to Euthanasia, mercy-killing granted dog
WASHINGTON - President Bush's dog Spot, the 15-year-old English springer spaniel who had remained eager to please despite increasing health troubles, died Saturday. Bush and his wife, Laura, went along with a veterinarian's recommendation to put Spotty, as the longtime Bush family pet was known, to sleep, according to White House spokesman Allen Abney. She had suffered a series of strokes recently, including one this week, he said.

And should it be the case that Nader realizes he hasn't enough votes to beat Bush...just because of machine politics...he might then throw his endorsement to Edwards or Kerry...and win himself a decent job within the new administration.
It could happen!
This is not necessarily a bad thing for Democrats. Especially if he is included within the debates. Mr. Nader has been a lifelong fighter for average Americans, and has certainly earned the right to be a contender.
I say "Let him"! He can help spread the truth about Mr. Bush...which can only hurt Bush. It is not enough to win. Bush must lose.

MR. RUSSERT: You had said when John Edwards announced his candidacy that it was a good idea that he run for president.
MR. NADER: Yes.
MR. RUSSERT: You like him?
MR. NADER: I think the more organized the citizens are, the better a politician he's going to be. He's like an expanding accordion, unlike President Bush, who is really a giant corporation in the White House masquerading as a human being.
MR. RUSSERT: In terms of what you stand for, this is what you said in July of last year about George Bush: "[Nader] said Mr. Bush was not only `beatable but impeachable,' for deceptions and prevarications on national security matters..." Will part of your platform be the impeachment of George Bush?
MR. NADER: Let me put it this way. When a president misleads, if not fabricates, going to war and sending our sons and daughters to war with no exit strategy, with a quagmire over there, that is very serious, Tim. If there's any better definition of high crimes and misdemeanors in our Constitution, then misleading or fabricating the basis for going to war, as the press has documented ad infinitum, I don't know any cause of impeachment that's worse. So what is an impeachment? It's a hearing to see whether the House of Representatives is going to accuse or charge the president with high crimes and misdemeanors. And then it goes to the Senate for a trial. Our Founding Fathers gave the Congress the right to fire the president. It shouldn't be a big deal. For far more trivial reasons, you know, Clinton was impeached.
I think this country deserves a serious explanation of why, how, when this country was plunged into war against a brutal dictator tottering over an antiquated, non-loyal army, surrounded by hostile neighbors who, if he made one move against, would have obliterated him. It was oil. And oil has ruined so much of our foreign policy and antagonized so many people in the Third World, when we should be converting to renewable energy and solar energy and energy efficiency, all of which creates jobs in this country. So I think it is very important for the American people to take what happened last year very, very seriously.
MR. RUSSERT: So there should be an impeachment hearing and trial?
MR. NADER: I think Congressman John Conyers is going to file such a request.

When George W. Bush first heard how well John Edwards had done in Wisconsin, he suddenly began dry-heaving uncontrollably, his neck action prompting one of the White House Press Corps to mention his resemblance to a chickenhawk.
There, I say there... carked the unnamed reporter in tones not unlike those of our dear Mr. Leghorn, whose caricature was no doubt intended.

In our "How to Avoid Wealth and Fame" Series, we at Anonymoses hope to tackle one of the pressing issues of the day: "Why bother?"
Why bother, indeed! For your see, my friends, the striving for wealth and fame is just a positive spin on a more fundamental character flaw: Fear. Fear of Poverty. Fear of Obscurity.
As we examine this issue more thoroughly, better ways to spend your time and mind will emerge, and anxieties will fall away, as we shed the fear and the striving. But what is also shed are all the vicissitudes that go along with the multitude of things, the lack of time, the hurrying and scurrying, the 9 to 5, on and on...

I had been reading a wondrous book compiled by Marianne Williamson called "Imagine: What America Could Be in the 21st Century", when I stumbled upon the above quote while reading a chapter on Race Relations written by Kokomon Clottey and Aeeshah Ababio-Clottey, and I thought to myself, I said: "Self! This is one pregnant idea...given that some of the world's most troubling conflicts are among those whose hatred is of such ancience. May these ancient hatreds dissolve away like salt in warm water, never to crystallize again, but rather turn to tears and rain and then joy.
In the same chapter is this remarkable thought:
"Thich Nhat Hanh, the renowned Vietnamese Buddhist monk, said: "It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community -- a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. I had been reading a wondrous book compiled by Marianne Williamson called "Imagine: What America Could Be in the 21st Century", when I stumbled upon the above quote while reading a chapter on Race Relations written by Kokomon Clottey and Aeeshah Ababio-Clottey, and I thought to myself, I said: "Self! This is one pregnant idea...given that some of the world's most troubling conflicts are among those whose hatred is of such ancience. May these ancient hatreds dissolve away like salt in warm water, never to crystallize again, but rather turn to tears and rain and then joy.
In the same chapter is this remarkable thought:
"Thich Nhat Hanh, the renowned Vietnamese Buddhist monk, said: "It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community -- a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing that we can do for the survival of the Earth."

The lying liars are at it again...
Anyone who paid attention could see the manipulations going on in the markets toward the end of Clinton's administration. Greenspan kept throwing the brakes on, time after time after time. Folks at CNBC would boo while Gore was speaking, and talk about how Internet stocks were at cross-purposes with Pharmaceutical stocks. If Internet is up, Pharms are down, and vice-versa. And the closeness of the election made investors nervous...so yes, there was a decline, just had there been rises and falls throughout. Only thing is...the wrong guy won...and so it kept going down and down and down. Had Gore carried on the torch set by Clinton, as was perfectly natural given that it wasn't broken...the markets would have recovered quite quickly indeed.
