HyperLincoln: Clearinghouse for Democratic Convention & The Bloggers who Cover it

HyperLincoln: "hyperlinkin' the blognoscenti"

HyperLincoln

For a one-stop look at what is going on with the Democratic Convention, you can now go to HyperLincoln, who has now recruited the exceptional Jude Camwell (Iddybud), who was one of the bloggers who was invited to cover the convention.

HyperLincoln will be covering the speakers, the invited and disinvited bloggers, as well as other blognoscenti who have been doing great work in covering the election, the convention, and many other things relevant to making wise choices when the time comes to pull the levers.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall...

Haaretz - Israel News - Jews between Israel and France
(via ConventionBlogger and Josh Marshall)

Here is an excellent editorial by Haaretz on Sharon's misguided demand that France's Jews come immediately to Israel...

Lord knows Mr. Sharon is trying to protect Israel and the Jewish people, but one wonders if the less honorable things he has done in his life have not, perhaps, tainted his judgement.

Some day, the Jews, the Muslims, and the Christians will trade in their historical hatred, and make that quantum leap to Universal Love...as their, and our, God would wish upon us all.

As a citizen of the American South who has lived through the riots and hatred, I know these things can be overcome. I wish the Middle East, and indeed, the World...Godspeed!

The weapons of war have become too dangerous, and our consciences have become too desiccated by fear, to carry on...without dire results that will spoil what good remains.

People may want revenge...but not if it means sacrificing friends and family, for the short-term satisfaction of getting that revenge...which only pushes the cyle forward, ever-forward.

Forgiveness, as Dag Hammerskold once said, breaks the chain of causality.

Trust in Mister Sharon will surely wane with his recent remarks. And trust has dwindled considerably for Mister Bush.

It may well be time for both our countries to find more trustworthy leaders for whom Peace IS a virtue, and Universal Love is a possibility.

Weapons of Goliath
Anonymoses, July 31, 2003

In 1991, Noam Chomsky spoke of some of the atrocities of the first war in Iraq:

There was an awesome demonstration of this in Iraq./ Military operations were designed so that no battles took place...When U.S. troops entered Kuwait they were led by a battalion of engineers using bulldozers. These were used to bury possibly thousands of Iraqi soldiers alive in their trenches. They simply drove the bulldozers over the trenches and buried the soldiers alive. This is a horrible war crime, but nobody cares. Nonetheless, it does reveal something about U.S. military planning. If you attack someone who can defend themselves, you don't send bulldozers into battle. This makes it clear that the United States had prepared everything in such a way that there was never going to be a war. And effectively, there never was a war, only slaughter and atrocities.
-Noam Chomsky

When I hear about the graves of dead soldiers we now keep "finding"...whom should I assume put them there? Questions,  questions...

NEWS & OPINION

Rockers are urging young people to go out and vote against George W. Bush
Rickie Lee Jones, on her latest album, Evening of My Best Day, sings a song called “Ugly Man.” She told the New York Post that “it’s definitely about the Bushes…. They have no redeeming qualities. They’re despicable…. This is the closest we’ve come to Nazi Germany…. They see Iraq and Iran as a way to make money.”

The Assassination of Iraqi Intellectuals
Overlooked by the U.S. Press is the escalating assassination of Iraqi academics, intellectuals, and lecturers. More than 250 college professors since April 30, 2003, according to the Iraqi Union of University Lecturers, have been the targets of assassination.
...
According to Union of Iraqi Lecturers, if “the stream of assassinations” continue, Iraqi Colleges and Universities will be left without a qualified teaching staff.

Neoconservatives - never apologize, never explain
It's a bad time to be a neocon. All of their assumptions were wrong. Postwar Iraq turned out to be a dog's breakfast. The high-tech, high-speed military is so desperate for troops it's planning to offer bonuses of up to $10,000 to sailors and airmen who would otherwise muster out of the Navy and Air Force. The weapons of mass destruction haven't been found and democracy isn't flowering.

Big Three Networks Dim Their Lights on Kerry
A new study of network TV election coverage over the first half of 2004 reveals a dimming spotlight for Democratic candidate John Kerry. Meanwhile, the Bush campaign has made impressive strides in placing their own candidate before the cameras.

Girlie-men can't take criticism

America is filled with girlie-men...who become squeamish when people do something so simple as to criticize the president. Look at how these girlie-men behave when Linda Ronstadt dedicates a song to Michael Moore. Or the Dixie Chicks make fun of the president. Or Bill Maher jokes about the president.

Girlie-men? Yes they are out there. They are the thin-skinned, pussilanimous, weak-minded Bush apologists you hear whining when their protective bubble is burst.

TAKE THE POLL

The Great Sandy Berger Backfire

The Tables Turn

I'll cut to the chase...

Melanie Ann Pustay, Deputy Director
Office of Information and Policy
Department of Justice
Suite 570, Flag Building
Washington, D.C. 20530-0001

July 21, 2004

Dear Ms. Pustay:

This letter constitutes a request under the Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA"), 5 U.S.C. §552, and is submitted on behalf of the Democratic National Committee.

According to recent reporting, an investigation into former National Security Adviser Samuel Berger has been going on for at least nine months, since October 2003. Yet, the criminal investigation only came to light three days prior to the release of a report expected to be critical of the Bush administration's lack of focus on the events leading up to the 9-11 attacks. As conservative scholar Norm Ornstein stated, "you can't look at the timing of this with anything but an enormous amount of skepticism." [CNN, 7/20/04]

In light of the seriousness of the possibility that the Bush administration and the Department of Justice have politicized an ongoing investigation, it is imperative that this Freedom of Information request is responded to in an expedited manner.

Under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. 552 and the regulations of the Department of Justice, 28 C.F.R. §16.3, I am requesting copies of the following:

Any and all communications relating or referring to the investigation of Samuel ("Sandy") Berger, between, correspondence (including electronic mail) between, memoranda between, phone records of communications between, meeting notes and/or minutes of meetings between, on the one hand, any official or employee of the US Department of Justice AND, on the other hand, (i) the Executive Office of the President or any unit or office thereof (including but not limited to the Office of the Vice President); (ii) any official, employee, or representative of the Republican National Committee; OR (iii) any official, employee or representative of the Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential campaign.

This request covers all documents created during the period from and including October 1, 2003 through and including July 20, 2004.

For your purposes in filling this request, please consider me under the category of "all other organizations," as defined by the Freedom of Information Act. If there are any fees for copying or searching for the records I have requested, please inform me of the cost prior to searching or copying, and only if the total exceeds $100.

If all or any part of this request is denied, please cite the specific exemption which you believe justifies your refusal to release the information and inform me of your agency's administrative appeal procedures available to me under the law.

Please provide all information on a rolling basis if possible. I appreciate your handling of this request as quickly as possible and I look forward to hearing from you within 20 working days, as the law stipulates.

If you have any questions or need further information concerning the above request, please contact me at the address below or at 202-863-8121.

Thank you for your attention to this request.

Sincerely,

Terence R. McAuliffe, Chairman
430 South Capitol Street, SE

SHORTZENEGGER

Compensation, of course!

Democrats Win! World Erupts in Celebration!

Celebration, relief and good cheer spread across the globe, as war-happy madman is replaced by sane and beautiful leaders who respect all peoples.

OR...

Republicans win. America goes to war with Iran.
Foolwells get their Armageddon. Millions die needlessly. A handful of suits reap windfall profits.

It really has come down to this. And make no mistake about it...this is the most important election in the history of the world.  It is a matter of life and death. Many, many deaths.  And frankly, we can't afford it.  Not in blood.  Not in treasure.  Not in the world community.

Those who see elections as mere sport may only bet on their own team, regardless of how much damage their "team" will wreak upon the enterprise.  But this would be a foolish supposition.  Even deadly.  And don't think blood won't blowback, if only in the subtlest ways. There will not be enough beer to drown out the sorrow of so many innocent people being slaughtered needlessly, just because you had to have your way.  Your way may not be the best way.

Regardless of any stats one may concoct, this president has done wrong by America and the World, and the overwhelming majority of people who happen to not live within our borders, are deeply troubled, to put it lightly, by our having such a bellicose leader and administration. And were we to re-elect him -- arguable the worst President in American history... after dropping the man who was perhaps the most prepared man in our history -- What are they to think, except that we are either insane, perverse, or jaded...and lacking all good judgement?

In this election, it is not, "It's the economy, Stupid." It is "It's the World, Stupid!"

Serendipitously, while writing my illustrious and correct thoughts, a song wafted from my speakers that sums it up pretty well:

"Out of the darkness, deliver me."

Indeed.  May we all be so delivered.

Flip-Flopper-in-chief, George W. Bush now says he wants to be a Peace President

Chickenhawks are clucking furious!

"Nobody wants to be the war president. I want to be the peace president... The next four years will be peaceful years." Bush used the words "peace" or "peaceful" a total of 20 times.

Senator John Warner was probably duped into Rev. Moon debacle

Warner Linked to the Rev. Moon (washingtonpost.com)

Senator Warner of Virginia is a reasonable man, a respectable man, and one who is not likely to knowingly allow what happened...to happen.

Instead of picking on Senator Warner, I would suggest that the media focus on more solid connections to the man who claims to be the Messiah...like the Washington Times, and the many Conservative groups Rev. Moon funds.

I personally don't know whether or not Rev. Moon is the Messiah, but when he says stuff like... his teachings have helped Hitler and Stalin be "reborn as new persons"...one has to wonder.

I suspect he is just feeling like a Messiah, the way religious conservatives flock to him for money and advice...so respectful and deferential and all.

"Outfoxed": FOX exposed as biased, unprofessional groupthinkers...at best

Imagine Jayson Blair...the notorious New York Times spinmeister who was canned and ridiculed for making up stories out of thin air.
Now multiply Jayson Blair by hundreds, thousands, and visualize them working for the same company.

You have stumbled into FOX News.  Get out while you can! They will try to indoctrinate you with lies, innuendo, distortion, propaganda...and bullying.

And if you don't believe me...watch "OutFoxed". It will open your eyes to the sad realities.
It will also make you incapable of ever taking these paid liars and buffoons seriously.
They may as well close up shop, bury their heads in shame, and hope to be hired as circus monkeys.

Thanks go to the dear folks, who may or may not want to mentioned, who hosted the wondrous party here in Charlotte...John Edwards country. The food was good, and the discussion, lively.  Yet another success story for MoveOn, Alternet, and...democracy.

Bush hopes war with Iran will help in re-election

Regime change in Iran now in Bush's sights

Leave it to George. As if our soldiers were rested and willing, Idiot George now wants to open yet another wound...in Iran.  And is he going to go and help with the fighting? No. He is going to send our youth over to do his dirty work.

Does this man never tire of killing? Does the Media never tire of aiding and abetting the killing?

Apparently not. They are already pounding the war drums. Manufacturing the consent.

One could say these are cancers on the world, but they kill far people more than cancer kills. And cancer shouldn't know better.

Listen. If the news doesn't pass through a reliable fact-checker...how 'bout just keep it to yourself! Bad information is worse than no information at all.
