Stall! Stall! or John Dean sez "Bush Should Be Impeached"

Stall! Stall! or John Dean sez "Bush Should Be Impeached"

BILL MOYERS:
You write that the administration has tried to block, frustrate or control any investigation into 9/11 using, quote, 'well-proven tactics not unlike those used by the Nixon White House during Watergate.' What tactics?
JOHN DEAN:
Stall. Stall.
We knew that at the Nixon White House. Some of these are time-tested tactics. When the Congress put together a joint inquiry itself was self-defeating because it's much more difficult for a joint inquiry with its size -- the lack of attention its staff can give to a group that large. It gets diffuse. And Cheney-- "

Bill O'Reilly is Salvagable

Bill O'Reilly is Salvagable

Some people are paid to bullshit, and they will do just that as long as the checks keep coming in. But for some dumb reason, I think Bill O'Reilly may well become one of the first to jump ship, and start speaking the truth.

Don't ask me why I think this. It may be the medication. But I do think that Al Franken's tough love will have an effect on him, and he will begin to understand that it is indeed better for a bad person to become good than for a good person to simply remain good.

Just as members of Bush's own administration are beginning to jump ship before they wind up in a Watergate-like courtroom on the wrong side, so too are members of the punditocracy beginning to heed to words of John Dean, who, once again, is standing up to Goliath and warning us...this time in advance.

We all know this new millennium would have turned out more bright and peaceful under Gore. Bush kept up saddled to 20th century hatreds and warring and secrecies. This is not sunshine. This is Bushweather. BushWorld. And it is substandard. Probably criminal.

The Titanic is sinking, and thank heavens. We need to get back on a positive track, where we are friends of the world and earth. Not it's rapist.

Get out while you can. Help create the new sunshine. The bright new day. The world will love you for it. As will more than half of America.

Carpe millennium! (And do it right this time!)

Air America Radio & The O'Franken Factor make Limbaugh look Fat

O'Franken makes Limbaugh look Fat

Liberal genius, Al Franken

Today was historic. A bone fide Liberal radio show made its debut, and while it was rocky for some internet listeners, it was certainly a far cry from the hyperventilative bloviance that has become the earmark, so to speak, of Reich Wing Radio.
Soft-spoken, genteel, aristocratic, Mr. Franken shows why he, and not Mr. Limbaugh, gets to go to Harvard.

But the difference goes beyond style. It is even more obvious in content. Rush has to say what his trainers and sugardaddies tell him to say. Mr. Franken can say anything he wants, being true to Harvard's dedication to free inquiry, free expression, free...dom.

Rush and the Reich are not so freethinking. Nor has Rush had the wondrous opportunities to learn from the greatest minds of his generation. Franken has used his mind well, and has the added benefit of also having a good heart. Rush, a druggie, is not safe for your children. Al Franken is. And he will, daily, show why he is the better role model, and more to be trusted.

Stay tuned. I will. I love to learn. Mere emotionality does not impress, no matter how loudly one proclaims it.

FUTURE SHOWS

Just like hollywood's Bob Roberts, so too does Rush Limbaugh, the fat man's messiah, usurp badges of the young and cool, like rock music...and plays it on his show, as if he too is cool by extension. Well, Al Franken needn't usurp. He already has the great musicians and songs on his side...from CSY to Beatles to Radiohead to Talking Heads. And I think it would be great if he were to use music to help convey the message. Buffalo Springfield, Patti Smith, Peter Gabriel...and on and on and on. Take the music back! Maybe have live performances, or host benefit concerts...

And what about guests? Of course there will be comedic greats, as well as political and philosophical greats. And Mr. Franken should not hestitate to make use of the Harvard Lampoon staff and alumnae. Conan did, and look at him! Delight and instruct! Bring your education to bear, and don't shy away from your superior education and connections. For years you have serves us with great good cheer. We will repay you with ears and mouths.

Do what the Limbaughs of the world are afraid to do: Let others speak. And reach high and low. Have Nobel prize winners and laureates as well as the word from the street. Do you think Desmond Tutu would ever appear on the EIB network? Fat chance! Tutu has taste and refinement. And no reason to overstate. Rush is the Head Overstater in charge of breeding an army of overstaters.

Learn from Conan and Letterman. There is never a dull moment on either show. And both relentlessly work at making each show better than the last. And it shows. This, along with an impressive guestlist...along with your natural wit, will endear listeners to return. The alternative is obsolescent, vacuous and atavistic. A backwards-running watch.

I expect the O'Franken Show to, one day, be as good or better than Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. You're off to a good start. Carpe Millennium!

ANONYMOSES SUGGESTS...

We, or rather, I, at The Mose, would like to make a few suggestions for future guests. I'll just brainstorm a few...
former SNL members, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Walter Cronkhite, Jon Stewart, Sting, Robert Fripp, Ian Anderson, Jon Anderson, Elton John, Joan Baez, Joan Shenendoah, Norah Jones, Phillip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Gore Vidal, Alexander Theroux, Jesus, Peter Gomes, Arthur Kleinman, Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Martin Sheen, Aaron Sorkin, Peter Serkin, Andy Griffith, Maya Angelou, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Tom Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Iddybud, Flipper, Lassie, Robert Wilson, Robert Anton Wilson, Thom Yorke, Oprah Winfrey, Steven VW Beckwith, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Robert Borosage, Joe Conason, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Cher, Barbra, Monica even... Surely most would donate their time for a good cause.

Bleeding-Head Conservatives: What do they want? Why do they smell?

Bleeding-Head Conservatives: What do they want? Why do they smell?

For years, bleeding heart liberals have dominated the scene, safe in their towers at the heart of America's headland. But now bleeding-head conservatives are gathering in America's heartland to demand that the headland step up their already considerable support for the heartland. But the headland is running out of money. Rather the Bush Gang ran off with it. So just as the headland has suffered, so too shall it's underachieving dependent, the heartland.

But this is all metaphor, mind, and has little to do with life on the ground.
Or does it??

To be continued...

I suppose I also entered into the mind of Mr. Collins as well, now that I think on it.

At any rate, I appear as Dave, email questioner, and basically ascertained that Nader is still Nader, and that Democrats needn't worry. He will, I feel sure, serve to not only forward ideas (which only Democrats have), and serve as a second front against Bush. I can't remember a harsh word about Kerry, but there were many harsh words about Bush. He will, in other words, serve the same purpose as Dean did, when he showed that Democrats had to be true to their consciences, and not merely pose, or worse, actually be...Bush Lite.

Nader too will help expose the foolishness so long propped up, largely by the Media.

Israel not safe under Sharon OR Bush

United Press International: Third Intifada launched in Gaza

I feel sorrow for the people of Israel who have to keep sacrificing their lives and well-being largely because of the policies (or lack thereof) of Ariel Sharon and George W. Bush. They are veritable terrorist incubators, rather than true peacemakers.

Peace is a treasure too subtle and rare to be appreciated by Mr. Sharon or Mr. Bush, and it should be more than obvious.

I'm reminded of a tale from childhood that goes:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall...

...and one cannot help but wonder if Sharon's wall is not really just another Humpty Dumpty wall. He sadly is even beginning to resemble the good Mr. Dumpty.

But this is too flip for such a serious time as this.
The simplest answer is just to vote them out of office.

As Dag Hammerskjold once said: "Forgiveness breaks the chain of causality." Something like that. It is no longer acceptable that the rich and powerful can want to fight, but the poor and powerless are the one who, in every way, pay.

Can Palestinians keep their rage under control, and actually forgive?
Can Israelis?

Some problems are solved. Some are resolved. But some are simply dissolved.

Here's to a renaissance of conscience...that subtle organ that has been bred out of us. It may be necessary, but will certainly be a welcome addition to our jaded personalities.

Top Bush Advisor, Richard Clarke, says loyalty trumped by decency, conscience

Richard Clark looking like a bald Chris Bury

Top Bush Advisor, Richard Clarke, says loyalty trumped by decency, conscience

"Loyalty is important, but only to a point.", says former Bush advisor and counter-terrorism expert, Richard Clarke, who, among other titles, was also former Terrorism Czar in the Clinton administration, and served under both Bushs and Reagan, who originally appointed him. He went on to explain that when the president is not safeguarding the lives of Americans, he no longer deserves that loyalty.

Mr. Clark, who is probably the person who knows more about the subject than anyone else on earth, has said that Bush was inadequate for the job, and that Bush's complacency and misplaced focus on Iraq "because it had better targets" has cost actual American lives, and threatens to put even more American lives in jeopardy.

3,000 lives needn't have been spared on 9/11, soldiers needn't have lost their lives in Iraq, since Saddam was never a real threat, and the soldiers and civilians who will lose their lives in the coming days, months, years...will not have needed to have done so.

And when one considers the profiteers of war, and the fact that they are to this day, reaping huge profits while our sons and daughters are being sacrificed to the alter of their money...hardly seems right. Seems almost sinister, really.

At least it ought to make you think twice before you pull the lever for this guy who has meant death and sorrow to so many families in America and abroad.

I applaude the nobility of Mister Clark, who, after all, is trying to keep America safe...as he has done for decades. Only this time the solution may be in the form of new leadership. I know he would agree.

And no drop-out Limbaughs can take away what Mister Clark can bring to those with ears to hear and learn...though try they certainly will.

A Renaissance of Conscience?

But I think there will be a renaissance of conscience, if you will. And that those who know things will come forward, and realize that their loyalty too has been abused. And that lives are being lost needlessly, and because of incompetence, greed perhaps, and pressures which simply should not have been allowed to enter into the decision-making process, while those that should have been...were ignored.

This is not good maintenence. Not good stewardship.
This is more like plunder.

Step forward, good people. Your ego exists as a quasi-separate entity from God, whose interests are at cross-purposes. Transcend your ego, like most responsible adults above the age of 40. It is a hindrance to real progress and harmony.

Conservatives (the C-list) lack brilliance, merit as guest-list proves
LAUREATES OF LIMBAUGH

Ever hear a nobel laureate being interviewed on Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly? Of course not! Nor will you have heard any on the world's A-list of brilliance and merit. But you may well have heard any number of laureates, in any number of fields...if you were listening to NPR. Why just last week, I heard an interview with Desmond Tutu.

When you turn on your radio, you have a few choices. You could listen to music, or you could listen to talk. That's about it. There is no fart channel. Well, let me think about that a minute...

OK..so Rush, though flatulating bloviance, or bloviating flatulence, is passing gas...onto the customer. He does at least give us a break by allowing all manner of gutter helmet to intercede.

There are no guests on Rush Limbaugh. All you get is pure Rush. Pure opinion. One voice. Dictation.

And one voice is not enough. Not if you value education, edification, amelioration.

I suspect there is a reason that Conservatives -- at least the most visible and outspoken ones in today's America -- are those very people who made Cs in school. They just got by. They may have also participated in that allied C-word, "cheating".
Anecdotally, the only folks I know who cheated happen to be conservatives. And strangely, they have tended to foist their cheating upon the post-educational world...cheating at work, cheating on their wives... It is as if they get a thrill from the cheating itself.

But quality rises on its own merit. It needs no shoehorn, no false promotion.
And quality recognizes quality, and also cheating. And quality avoids cheaters, and gravitates to kindred spirits. One reason you will not see laureates on Limbaugh.

No offense...but 4 thousand dollars! 4 million dollars in not enough to kill yourself over. But 4 thou is, well, silly. That's like a nickle in today's Bushbubble world. Which reminds me of a screenplay I wrote once, called "Prick in the Balloon". Who, or what, will be the prick that pricks the Bush balloon? "You have got lots of good, clean, Christian yogurts." Document proves absurd claim

"You have got lots of good, clean, Christian yogurts." Document proves absurd claim

Yogurtheadman in ecstasis

For more than 39 long American months, critics of the Bush Administration have made the seemingly absurd claim that you, and by extension, me, or I, have got lots of good, clean, Christian yogurts. And most have shrugged off the claim as little more than nonsense or ennuendo. But careful eyes have discovered otherwise, and the archaeoethnological world is all atwitter...not to be confused with al atwater, or Al Atwater (as he likes to fancy himself), who is the long lost brother of lee atwater, famous dead guy. (The long part may be overstatement.) But be that as it may, it is, nevertheless, a purely adventitious and rare joy to know, once and for all time, that such is indeed the case. That case, again, being the cleanness and Christianity of our formidable yogurts.

We have yet to gain access to these rare documents, but will seek to make them public, once they are made public.

The Bright and the Dull. It's your choice, Jackson! Be the Change.

A new man is in town...

...and he will help save us from further embarrassment.

When John Edwards stepped down from his campaign, a few days ago, a vacuum descended upon the Democratic Party. But not only Democrats, but also many Independents and free-thinking Republicans...who could appreciate his radiance and confident optimism. It was palpable. People began quoting many of his words and themes. As in a swoon, the loss washed over many who represent the best, and often most simple and honest, folks who represent that which is most treasured about America. Most people are not merely about self aggrandizement, personal gain and domination. America still lives because Americans care for those most in need of caring...not providing yet more money for those who least need it.

The reason I lament so, is that I only today discovered that there is now a "Draft Kerry-Edwards" website. Could it be that...Edwards lives?!

BushWorld Too Unstable for Market Strength

Yahoo! News - Stocks Slump on Security Fears

Bill Clinton was a good man. Still is. And frankly, so is George W. Bush. He darned well better be. He has a wondrous soul who has trusted him with her charms. He darned well better be a good man. And I'd suggest that if he isn't...maybe he should ask her what it's all about.

One thing it's not about is posturing. It is about standing up to those whose morals are questionable at best, but who, nevertheless, persist in saddling you with basically self-serving demands and requests, which you, and every other decent person know could be much better served elsewhere.

Yes, Bill Clinton was a good man, and still is. And the world, at least, knew or sensed this. And the world became more peaceful, and ironically, secure, because of the understanding that he would likelier help you than want to bomb you.

Some people will try to pretend that the economy is all fine and good under Bush's, er, gaze. But I ask you. For whom?

Sure, a handful of investors, military contractors, bomb manufacturers, flu vaccine, antidote, sex enhancing drug manufacturers and such have done quite well, thank you. But ask the average American. Moreover, ask everyone else in the world.

To fix the economy, we need to send a signal to the world, and to average Americans, that help is on the way. Real help this time. Not help in the form of a moribund economy. Not in the form of Shock and Awe and other environmental hazards. Not in the form of a secret Business Government whose goal is "Big Cookie", but whose means is raiding the cookie jar.

Democrats have proven that they can better be trusted with the common well, and the common wealth.

America can be a generator of healing. Healing ourselves and the world on many levels, none of which entail surgical strikes or Shock and Awe.

Help is on the way. If Bush were a good man, he would step out of the way.

Please. You cried when you left Crawford.

Be happy. Go home.

"What would Dubya Do?" : The new game that proves George ain't Jesus

We, at Anonymoses Humor o' Seriousness Corporation, have come up with yet another mind-blogglingly groovy new game to add to the cesspool of Human Achievement.

This one is almost too easy to play. Even feti can do it.

Alls ya do is ask a question that might have been asked Jesus. Or imagine you have a chance to ask Jesus a question.

Then imagine what George W. Bush would, in all earnest, say.

For example:

Q. Dear Jesus. What should we do? Our country is running out of oil, but there are more than few weak countries whose asses we could kick and steal their oil. Should we?
A. Been there. Done that... Who?

As the game is not proprietary, at least on our part, is is perfectly fine, in fact encouraged that you, so to say, make it your own, dawg.

Hummus of the Duchess

Hummus of the Duchess

Forget Hummers. Hummus is what is important.
Now Charlene over at Duchess Journal has shared her famous recipe.
(You'll need to go to the site to learn the procedure for proper preparation)

BEST EVER HUMMUS [Yep, this is the recipe I've been talking about in my "personal news" updates. Bon Appetit!]

Ingredients:
2 cups Garbanzo Beans [canned Chickpeas is fine]
1/3 cup Garbanzo liquid or water
1/4 cup Sesame Tahini
1/4 cup fresh Lemon Juice of two lemons
4 cloves of garlic [crushed or whole]
1 tbsp Olive Oil

I'd like to suggest adding a touch of Cumin. Such a noble and ancient spice can hardly find a better home.

Bush's "means justifies the ends" Crusade

Bush's "means justifies the ends" Crusade

Every Christian knows, deep down, that Bush's policies are a far cry from what Jesus would do...

Rense.com has an enlightening take on the matter, in their article called, "Laughter of the Gods".
EXCERPT

The more I look at the chaotic mess George W. Bush is making in every blessed corner of the world, the more I am inclined to take a closer look at the God in whose name he claims to be making it.

Just who IS this God that chats up brazen hypocrites and zealots in our midst -- whipping them into a frenzy of pharisaic attempts to strangle democracy at home and abroad? This awesome creature is on a murderous rampage in the Middle East, Africa, South America and -- as Donald Rumsfeld would say -- east, west, north and south somewhat. Armed and jackbooted, Bush's flinty-hearted Diety bears no resemblance to the compassionate and forgiving God in whom Christians have put their faith for more than two millenia.

More and more innocents are being herded onto the world's killing fields by the deliberate actions of a Christian nation -- in the name of its Christian God. What blasphemy! If Christians are unable to recognize the difference between good and evil; if they cannot see that those we crush under our heel are also God's creation -- then all those hours spent in Sunday School, church services, summer camp and "all day singing and dinner on the grounds" picnics were a sorry waste of time. The nature of a man is revealed by the company he keeps. Those who preach that maiming and killing terrified men, women and children is "God's will" -- who cover up the slaughter of their own citizens and who topple other regimes by force or farce -- are evil men who cavort with evil gods. And every single Christian in this country knows it.

Stay the course? Americans say Phooey!

Stay the course? Americans say Phooey!

Perhaps the worst news for Bush and the Republicans was a question in the Washington Post-ABC survey (1,202 adults, Thursday-Sunday) that asked: "Which of these two statements comes closest to your own views: A. After four years of George W. Bush, we need to elect a president who can set the nation in a new direction. B. We need to keep the country moving in the direction Bush has taken us." Same direction got 41 percent, new direction 57 percent. Two percent, bless their indecisive hearts, expressed no opinion.

That is the type of Bush-specific finding that defies malinterpretation by the wiliest of White House spinmeisters. A clear majority of Americans say (at least at the moment) that they are looking for something different. It is one growing deficit the administration will kiss off at its peril. It is a finding that does not meld well with the overarching Bush campaign themes of steadiness and staying the course. What if the course is one on which Americans do not wish to stay?

Where is Martin Luther Queen?

Where is Martin Luther Queen?

When will a powerful voice among the Gay community step forward and seize the moment and microphone...and rally those who are NOT Gay to rally to the cause of their diminishing civil liberties? What made ML King great was not that he could rally his own...which he did in great number. He was able to rally non-blacks to his cause.

Everyone knows or is related to a Gay person, if not several. And most people probably feel that they deserve to have the same rights as everybody else. What is needed is a good articulator, and one who can bring supporters out of the shadows. Just as with the blacks during King's time, there are still those who, for whatever reason, are embarrassed or ashamed to be seen in a group of Gay people...perhaps for fear that they will be considered Gay themselves.

There is a time for flambouyance, but there is also a time for the wearing of standardwear...you know..jeans and tee-shirts.

Where is Martin Luther Queen? It is time to come forward and state your case. This is the election that, for good or ill, has landed on your doorstep. Remember King's nobility, and approach the mike. Your time is now.

Must we wait until you have your "I've got a speech" dream?

George W. Bush: Less than Zero

George W. Bush: Less than Zero

It fascinates me to consider how stupid those who voted for Dubya must feel, after 3 years of innanely stupid moves, pussilanimous hiding, staged speeches, faltering jobs, diminishing respect, ecological abuse, financial plunder, and lie after lie of this mere puppet of a man, whom Laura is probably embarrassed to call husband. Less, indeed, than zero.

Do I sound harsh? Well, listen to the 24/7 tripe spewing from the radios, and tell me it is somehow unique. One tries to carry on a gentlemanly conversation, but there is just so much vitriol. What is one to do? Roll over and play dumb?

Is it that George can get away with anything but a sexual liasson?
What if a blue dress were to appear, with Bush's, er, excitement, upon it? Would that signal the end of Bush? An impeachment...led by freepers? Or would that too be ignored, glossed over, like Arnold's gropings?

Who are the hypocrites?

I think you know...

2 lucky people are promised jobs in Bush's economic "recovery"

Bush's Economic Indicator: 2 New Jobs (washingtonpost.com)

Someone take this man to an asylum. He has completely lost it now.
When a stooge at one of his "planned spontaneity" events said he might be able to put 2 new people to work, George W. Bush saw this as proof of his prowess as an economic generator.

The only 2 new jobs that are necessary to make a real change in the economic climate are those of John Kerry and his running mate.

Unemploy Bush. Let him see how it feels to be today's American.

Republicans stole 4000+ pages of Democratic documents over a period of 18 months

"A 65-page report by the Senate Judiciary Committee concludes that Orrin Hatch's senior counsel Manuel Miranda, and other Republican staffers, stole 4000+ pages of Democratic documents over a period of 18 months. Though Hatch says he's 'mortified,' his heartfelt defense of privacy rings hollow after MoveOn.org found that both Hatch and Miranda had appeared several times with obscure right-wing radio show host Kay Daly, as little as a week before she became the first to leak the memos to the public. Campaign to stop the war profiteers

The Institute for Southern Studies
Join the Campaign to
STOP THE WAR PROFITEERS
AND END THE CORPORATE INVASION OF IRAQ

EXCERPT:
A handful of well-connected corporations are poised to make billions in profits off the death and destruction of war in Iraq.

Merchants of misery like Bechtel, Halliburton, MCI and others — many with scandal-ridden records — are raking in massive profits through insider “reconstruction” contracts. Other multinationals are leading a “second invasion” of corporate interests seeking to seize control of Iraq’s oil, water and other resources — resources that belong to the Iraqi people.

It’s time to stop the war profiteers and corporate looters of Iraq. Join Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, United for Peace and Justice, Veterans for Peace, and others in the campaign today!

The Institute for Southern Studies
"MAKING A KILLING: The New War Profiteers"
From the winter 2003/2004 issue of Southern Exposure, the award-winning magazine of the Institute for Southern Studies

the basic tactics of the war profiteer – over-charging, cutting corners, and seeking to conceal the truth about what is going on – remain familiar. Indeed, the Bush administration’s open policy of connecting the Iraq military operation to economic goals of controlling the country's oil, water and other key resources and industries has drawn charges that the U.S. is engaging in that most elemental form of war profiteering: plunder.

In These Times | War Profiteering and You

It's the old "Screw things up, then charge to fix it". Infra dig. At least for those who still have integrity and a working conscience...

Documents prove that Bush ignored his commitment to the United States military

Documents prove that Bush ignored his commitment to the United States military: "Documents prove that Bush ignored his commitment to the United States military"

Where was George?

Is Bush's hateability going to be an election year issue?

I should start out by saying that I do not hate Mister Bush.
But I'm not going to.
Instead I'm going to say why I love the man.
He is one of God's children.
With emphasis on the children part.
Were he mature, he would have outgrown what we adults call "his ego".
He hasn't. And because he hasn't, he come across as a feller who is still locked in his frat years. His values have yet to show any simulacrum of evolution. But then again...they don't believe in evolution.

I do not hate Mister Bush. OK...I said it, and mean it. But I do wish he would attain cosmic consciousness already. What on earth is he waiting for?

Many are not so kind as yours truly. And many people, the world over, actually hate the man. And this hateability might well become an issue this year, if it hasn't already.

God-willing, Mister Bush will at least try to snap to, and give Senator Kerry at least the appearance of a challenge. But Kerry, as they say, has a "likeability problem", as if being likeable were a bad thing. At least he doesn't have a "hateability problem". Much more severe.

But I would suggest to Mister Bush that he stop himself from hating, and then his own bad karma might follow suit.

It's all so confusing sometimes.
Don't hate.
Just make Bush the Baseball Commissioner.
And leave mature problems to mature people.

For the last time...George W. Bush is not gay. How could he be? He is a married man, and thus there had to be someone from a different sex involved. The whispering campaign is nothing but that. Alan Greenspan: The World's Most Duplicitous Man

Greenspan's Con Job

From THE NATION and William Greider:

It is not exactly that he lies, but Alan Greenspan certainly ranks among the most duplicitous figures to serve in modern American government. Using his exalted status as economic wizard, the Federal Reserve chairman regularly corrupts the political dialogue by sowing outrageously false impressions among gullible members of Congress and adoring financial reporters. These distortions are not harmless; they become solemn writ for lawmakers and opinionmongers. Greenspan is especially destructive when he opines on public matters outside his supposed expertise as a central banker. His thinking is still anchored by Ayn Rand's brittle social philosophy: Let the strong prevail, let the weak pay for their weakness.

Why Haiti was a Coup D'Etat

Coup in Haiti

From THE NATION article:

What happened in Haiti was a coup d'état, and it's almost funny to hear Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and Scott McClellan call that claim "absurd" and "nonsense." The coup didn't come in one fell strike, which fact camouflaged it for a time; we're used to a coup being a coup--which means a cut or blow in French--something sudden. But the coup against Aristide, and by extension against the Haitian people, was prolonged, a chronic coup. It began when Aristide was first elected at the end of 1990 and continued right up until he was hustled aboard a plane and flown to what he was told would be a place of his choice but that turned out to be the former homeland of fabled killer and diamond collector Jean-Bédel Bokassa, a country where, according to the CIA country report available on the web, a ten-year elected civilian government was recently replaced by a military coup d'état. Sound familiar?

One thing about coups: They don't just happen. In a country like Haiti, where the military has been disbanded for nearly a decade, soldiers don't simply emerge from the underbrush; they have to be reorganized, retrained and resupplied. And of course, for something to be organized, someone has to organize it. At the end of the 1700s when heroic fighters like Henry Christophe, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Toussaint L'Ouverture joined forces to overthrow the French planters, they did it in a fashion quite similar to these latter-day brigands. Driving into one city after another with sabers drawn, burning and looting and seizing control, they took the north and then moved southward. Even then, with their scant means of communication, they planned it, they organized it. And they too had help from abroad--from the Americans, in fact.

In the current coup, there are several players. There is the disgruntled former Haitian army (an institution with a violent and unpalatable recent history), which has been wielded many times in the service of coups d'état, often subsidized by its masters, the elite of Haiti. The elite, too, had their hand in this coup--it's hard to believe in this day and age, but they must be called the entrenched class enemies of the Haitian people. There is "a growing enthusiasm among businessmen to use the rebels as a security force," said a news report from the Los Angeles Times after the remnants of the Haitian army that helped engineer the coup descended on the capital. "[The businessmen] welcomed the rebels."

Kerry's VP List - Edwards and Clark are the best shot

CBS News | Kerry's VP List | March 3, 2004?11:49:12

CHARLOTTE--Howard Dean is awesome. But I can't see how he would add much to Kerry's chances of winning the presidency. By virtue of being the last of the so-called "top tier" candidates standing ...so far, granted... Senator John Edwards has shown that he can not only win votes on his own, he is in ascendancy. He is also handsome, a gifted speaker, a man of the people, smart, good-hearted, and Southern. General Wes Clark is also all of those things, although he didn't get as many votes as Edwards, But has the added advantage of a distinguished military career...thus adding so much gravitas to a Kerry ticket as to make Bush-Cheney seem laughable by comparison...even with their self-touted on-the-job experience, and, of course, Bush's brilliant stealth tactics while in the National Guard.

Of all the other possible candidates Mr. Meyer mentions, the only one that should even be considered is Senator Hillary Clinton. But I tend to think Edwards could achieve what she could bring, and then some. The others are simply untested, or tested and failed. Edwards and Clark have been tested and vetted...and have met with considerable approval.

Al Gore might make an interesting "wild card", as would someone outside the usual suspects, like a Robert Redford or an Oprah Winfrey.

But of the usual suspects...don't stray too far from Edwards or Clark. If you do, you lose...or make it much harder on Kerry.

Think synergy! All democratic forces should converge to send Bush packing.
The fate of the world is at stake.

Seriously...how on earth could God, The God, choose his or her r-r-r-richest children for special attention, when there are so many others in greater need? Drudge is an idiot, and probably has no experience with God whatsoever...or he wouldn't be the way he is. Look at the way he spins Edwards' working-class upbringing. Aw, never mind.
